Description
Sakkara is where Egyptian pyramid-building started. The Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2650 BC, is the oldest stone monument in the world. It’s about 30km south of Giza, so combining it with the Pyramids makes for a full day without too much driving.
We pick you up at 8am and head to Sakkara first, since it’s further away and the site gets hot by midday. You get about 90 minutes there. The Step Pyramid itself is under restoration and you can’t go inside, but the complex around it — the Heb Sed court, the South Tomb, the colonnade — is mostly flat and accessible. The Imhotep Museum at the entrance is fully accessible and has the best explanations of what you’re looking at.
There’s a small electric train that runs from the entrance to the Step Pyramid. It has a ramp and is free with your ticket. Worth using if you don’t want to push over the path, which has some rough patches.
Then we drive back north to Giza for the Pyramids. Same setup as our Pyramids-only tour — accessible entrance, Panorama viewpoint, Sphinx, about two and a half hours on site. Van is a Toyota HiAce with rear lift and tie-downs.
Back to your hotel by 4 or 4:30. On the way back we can stop for lunch at a local place if you want, or take you straight to the hotel.

Good to know
- Sakkara has more uneven ground than Giza. The main path from the entrance to the Step Pyramid is paved, but some side areas are sand and gravel. The driver will point out which parts are easiest.
- Memphis, the ancient capital, is 3km from Sakkara. It’s a small open-air museum with a giant statue of Ramses II. If you have time, we can add it for $15 extra. It’s mostly flat and accessible.
- Summer afternoons at Sakkara can be brutal. Bring water and a hat. We recommend a morning start.
- Book at least 48 hours ahead if bringing an electric wheelchair.
